What is Cupping Massage?

Cupping massage is a soft tissue treatment that some of our massage therapists integrate into sessions using flexible silicone cups. Unlike traditional stationary cupping, our therapists may glide the cups smoothly across the skin or incorporate assisted stretches, combining the benefits of hands-on massage with the therapeutic effects of cupping. It’s typically used alongside other massage techniques rather than as a standalone treatment, and works well for clients dealing with muscle tightness, trigger points, or tension that’s been resistant to other approaches.

How Does Cupping Therapy Work?

When the cups are applied, they create suction that lifts the skin and underlying tissue, increasing blood flow to the treated area. This is also thought to create space between fascial layers — easing the sensation of tightness or restriction that contributes to pain and limited mobility. The result, for most clients, is a feeling of looser, more mobile tissue and relief from areas of tension.

Benefits of Cupping Massage

When integrated into your massage therapy session, cupping can provide:

  • Relief from trigger points and muscle knots when combined with therapeutic massage
  • A sense of reduced tightness and tension in overworked or injured tissue
  • Support for recovery and tissue mobility between training sessions
  • Stress relief, relaxation, and sense of improved wellbeing

Cupping Therapy for Athletes

Athletes have embraced cupping therapy as part of a broader recovery and mobility routine. Whether you’re a competitive athlete or a weekend warrior, cupping can be a useful addition to your recovery toolkit alongside massage, helping address muscle tightness, ease tension between training sessions, and support the mobility you need for comfortable movement.

Cupping Massage FAQs

Does cupping therapy hurt?

This depends on the individual, the technique used, and the amount of suction applied. Most people describe the sensation during cupping as a “tight, pulling” feeling rather than actual pain. Areas with more muscle tension may feel more sensitive during treatment, but this shouldn’t cross the line into genuine pain. Communication with your massage therapist is key to ensuring the treatment stays within your comfort zone.

How long do cupping marks last?

The duration of cupping marks varies considerably from person to person and depends on several factors, including skin sensitivity, the intensity of suction used, and individual circulation and healing rates. Generally, marks last anywhere from three days to two weeks, with most fading within five to seven days.

How often should you get cupping massage therapy?

The frequency of cupping therapy depends on your goals, the intensity of treatment, and how your body responds. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but these general guidelines can provide a starting point for you and your massage therapist determine an appropriate schedule.

For acute issues like muscle strains or localized pain, some people benefit from sessions once or twice per week until symptoms improve.

For chronic conditions or maintenance care, sessions every two to four weeks may be sufficient.

Athletes in heavy training might incorporate cupping weekly or bi-weekly as part of their recovery protocol.

How much time should I book?

Recommended session time varies based on your body and goals. 60 minutes is just enough time for most people to receive a full-body massage without any special attention to problem areas.

If you would like your therapist to spend extra time on a specific area or if you are more muscular (athletes, etc), 90 minutes is recommended. 120 minutes is recommended for those that have more muscle mass AND specific issues to address.

Do you accept insurance?

Sorry, but we do not accept health insurance or Medicaid at this time. However, there are some instances where you may be able to receive full reimbursement or partial payment assistance through other forms of insurance. Please let us know if you need a receipt for reimbursement.

Do your therapists do "fire cupping"?

We do not. “Fire cupping” with glass cups originated within Traditional Chinese Medicine and is commonly performed by acupuncturists. We primarily use silicone cups with allow for movement (gliding) of the cups once they are applied.
